Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink for Cheap (or Free) This Week

By

Each week, we bring you our top picks for the best places to booze on the cheap in SF.

1. Free Firestone Walker at The Republic: Paso Robles-based brewery Firestone Walker is looking to build interest in its wares by offering a free tasting at Marina beer destination The Republic. They'll be providing at least five beers for sampling, along with commentary on what makes each variety special. (Friday, August 6, 6-8 pm, at The Republic, 3213 Scott St., Marina.)

2. Craft Bar with Etsy Labs: Always a reliable source of smiles and cheap beer, Etsy's monthly instructional workshop/drinking venue has plenty of Trumer Pils and free snacks (Amber India's catering this month) to go around. At this installment, participants can learn to make their own books, silk-screen, or get knitting and crocheting tips from a "Stitch 'n Bitch" circle. (Thursday, August 5, 5-9 pm, at The Museum of Craft and Folk Art, 51 Yerba Buena Lane, SOMA.)

3. Throwback Thursday at Press Club: Drinking wine can be a pricey endeavor, but thanks to the efforts of the folks at Press Club, affordable vino can be had at their Thursday happy hour. They'll be offering Saintsbury's Garnet Pinot for $4 a glass. (Thursday, August 5, 6-10 pm, at Press Club, 767 Market St., Union Square.)

4. $1 Mondays at The Homestead: While the Mission's ultra-slick 1900s saloon has some lower-class affectations (throw those peanut shells on the floor!), drink prices are altogether 2010. The Homestead makes an exception for Mondays, though, when PBRs go for $1, the peanut detritus flows, and the music is exclusively vintage rockabilly and soul. (Mondays, all night, at The Homestead, 2301 Folsom St., Mission.)

5. Free Brunch Mimosa at Punjab: The slightly misnamed Chinese restaurant on the 24th St. corridor wants to build its brunch business, so when you stop in on Saturday or Sunday morning for an avocado egg roll, they'll give you a free mimosa or glass of sparkling wine. Like a rose through concrete, San Francisco grows brunch in the unlikeliest places. (Saturday and Sunday, 10 am-3 pm, at Punjab, 2838 24th St., Mission.)
