Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink For Cheap (or Free) This Week

By

Each week, we bring you our top picks for the best places to booze on the cheap in SF.

1. SFMOMA: Now Playing: The occasional Now Playing events at the SFMOMA should be circled in red in every cheap boozer's datebook, thanks to their combination of cool art, free beer and wine, and cheap, tasty small plates. Your half-price museum admission (members get in free) includes gratis Trumer Pils and Scribe wines, and edibles go for $5. (Thursday, September 16, 6-8 pm, at SFMOMA, 151 3rd St., SOMA.)

2. Cocktails For a Cause: Support the good folks at Big Brothers Big Sisters by attending their fundraising event, where your $10 entry fee buys free beer from 5:30-7:30. They'll also be featuring selected $5 apps, including meatballs, fries, calamari, and onion rings. (Wednesday, September 15, 5:30-7:30 pm, at the Irish Times, 500 Sacramento St., Financial District.)

3. Master Sommelier at Omnivore: Evan Goldstein, a master sommelier and expert on unique grape varieties, is visiting Omnivore Books to introduce his latest tome, Daring Pairings. For those who dare, he'll also be offering a few pairings on site for sampling-- and it's all free. (Thursday, September 16, 6-7 pm, at Omnivore Books, 3885a Cesar Chavez St., Noe Valley.)

4. Bottomless Mimosas at Spire: Spire, the new restaurant in the AT&T Park nexus, is adding brunch to its lineup-- and considering that the restaurant offers everything from a raw bar to housemade charcuterie, it should be a crowdpleaser. Also in the crowdpleasing category: the now de rigueur bottomless mimosa, clocking in at a very reasonable $10. (Saturday and Sunday, 11-3 pm, at Spire, 685 3rd St., SOMA.)

5. Beer Tasting Party at Pedro's: To launch their new Beer Ratings Guide, Nirvino is hosting a beer tasting party at Pedro's Cantina, the new Mexican offshoot of Pete's Tavern. Your $5 admission (which benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation) buys access to samples of 12 different West Coast beers, from the likes of Dogfish Head, Anchor, Trumer, and New Belgium. RSVP here. (Tuesday, September 21, 6-9 pm, at Pedro's Cantina, 128 King St., SOMA.)
