This Week's Best Food Events: Kraut, Crêpes and Eat-Ins

Perfect Preserving
Get your kraut on September 9 at the “Sauerkraut Made Simple” class at the Ferry Building, taught by Kathryn Lucas, founder of Farmhouse Culture. During the two-hour, $30 class you’ll learn everything  you ever wanted to know about fermented cabbage and leave with your very own starter kraut to take home.

Pie One On
If you think your chocolate cream or peach pie is blue-ribbon quality, bake one for the Pie Contest at Omnivore Books on September 10. Bake as many (and as many varieties) as you like, then pit them against rival pies in a competition to determine the best of the city. The event is free for pie bakers, $5 for those wishing to eat and judge. The winner splits the door money (and gets bragging rights).

Container Store
If you’ve got a green thumb but no yard, learn the basics of container gardening at a hands-on workshop at 18 Reasons on September 8 from 7-9 p.m. Leslie Bennett and Patrick Rodysill of Garden Fare will teach you everything you need to know to turn your small space into a verdant edible wonderland.

A Pancake By Any Other Name
With the sudden explosion of food carts, it’s hard to separate the wheat from the chaff—which are worth a stop? We suggest the adorable new Crêperie Saint Germain (creperiesaintgermain.com), parked at the edge of a parking lot at 546 Howard Street. They’re making organic buckwheat crêpes (both sweet and savory) and—get this—they’re open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, and on weekends until 3:30 a.m. What is this, New York?

Potluck For School Lunch
Time to flex your civic muscle—on September 7, Labor Day, Slow Food USA is staging over 280 “Eat-Ins” throughout the United States. Part potluck, part sit-in, these public meals are intended to rally people in support of getting real food into schools.
