DJs and Street Food
If you want to get your fix of both beats and beets, head to the “Dirty Dishes” event on July 22nd at the Lookout. The event will feature DJs and food carts, including Seoul on Wheels, Toasty Melts and Cookie Wag SF. The party begins at 9 p.m. and continues until the wee hours. Admission is $3—RSVP here.
Mission Farmers Market
At long last, the Mission—arguably our town’s most food-centric neighborhood—is getting a farmers market of its own. Beginning this Thursday, the stretch of Bartlett street between 21 and 22nd streets will be turned over to a panoply of vendors, hawking their wares from 4-8 p.m. Get your veggies, then finish up with a beer at Mama Toby’s.
Food Art at Silverman Gallery
Beginning on July 23, the Silverman Gallery will hosting a group show entitled “Food for Thought,” curated by Sabrina Buell. The gastro-centric pieces—from a dozen different artists—deal with “the consumption of food, how food is an elevated object imbued with deeper meaning, and how the female body is a thing to eaten and consumed like food.” The show is up until August 31.
Frank Bruni at Omnivore Books
If you missed his appearance the first time around, here’s a second opportunity to meet Frank Bruni, former New York Times restaurant critic and author of the recently published memoir, Born Round. The author and discerning palate will be at Omnivore Books from 4-5 p.m. on July 25, and the event is free and open to the public.
A Food Lovers Book Club
Finally, a book club for food lovers. Join 18 Reasons’ three-month food lit book club and treat yourself to three great books and three great conversations. For this installment, the group is reading Elizabeth David’s An Omelette and a Glass of Wine, The Town that Food Saved by Ben Hewitt and My Garden, written by Jamaica Kincaid. The reading will be punctuated by monthly meet-ups (the fourth Saturday of each month) and the cost to participate is $30 (no books) or $70 (with all three books). To sign up, click here.
