Fall's Sensorial Designs Play With Pattern, Color, and Texture

Points of Interest

1. Inspired by the otherworldly beauty under the sea, these monochromatic pieces find drama in texture rather than color. The spiky sea urchin informed this pendant light, made of natural cane, from Coup Studio; $2,650 at Coup d’Etat (Potrero Hill).

2. Rugged, hand-carved stones from Artistic Tile’s Portrait collection are reminiscent of sand dollars; $50-70 per sq. ft. at Artistic Tile (Potrero Hill).

Bloom Bloom Room

3. For her debut collection for The Rug Company, Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton does her house proud with a chic poppy design, deconstructed and magnified on a wall hanging woven in the 16th Century method of aubusson tapestries; $6,495 at Hewn (Potrero Hill).

4. Age-old florals have gone macro in scale and are suddenly arrestingly chic. Transform the living room into a garden of delight with Janus et Cie’s hand-sculpted microfibre chair; $3,744 at Janus et Cie (Potrero Hill).

Bronze Age

5. Sandcast or glazed, bronze is the new black. Milled and dried at a studio in Joshua Tree National Park, Alma Allen’s coffee table is carved from salvaged claro walnut tree and cast in bronze; $10,000 at The Future Perfect (Pacific Heights).

6. Ceramicist Daniel Ogassian’s geometric tiles create the illusion of three-dimensional walls and can only be described as hypnotic; $96-100 per sq. ft. at Ann Sacks (Potrero Hill).

7. At Trove, multimedia artists Jee Levin and Randall Buck created their heze wallpaper print by applying fiber-optic light to photographic paper; $16 per sq. ft. at De Sousa Hughes (Potrero Hill).

8. Meet the new wave of organics, where handicrafts collide with innovative technique. Fashion designer Issey Miyake, known for his signature minimalist garments cut from a single piece of cloth, has pared lighting down into collapsible forms for his partnership with Artemide in this mendori lamp; $1,260 at Artemide (FiDi).
