Are You Ready for the Biggest Fashion Show on the West Coast?

By

The Bay Area may not have a fashion week of its own these days, but one event taking place on the Peninsula this weekend hopes to pull off something close to it in the span of one evening.

Billed by organizers as the largest fashion show on the West Coast, the Stanford Charity Fashion Show promises an unusual assortment of featured designers, in that well-known names such as Nanette Lepore and Betsey Johnson will be represented in the show alongside independent New York labels Reverie and PriestessNYC. A handful of Stanford student designers are part of the show, as are San Francisco’s KittinHawk and Oakland jewelry designer Corinthia Peoples.

As for the show’s claim of being the largest fashion show around, the SCFS’s Stephanie Werner broke it down for us, saying, “Our 2009 event brings 38 designers and 1000 guests into a single tent with a 70-foot walkway. The designer quantity, audience size, and fact that this all happens in one show as opposed to over the course of a week all combine to make this the largest fashion show on the West Coast.”

While we can agree that size matters, we’re more intrigued by the show’s underlying mission to promote diversity through event planning and fashion while contributing to a worthy cause. Proceeds from this year’s ticket sales go to support international aid organization Doctors Without Borders (Medecins sans Frontieres).

The Stanford Charity Fashion Show takes place Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m. on the Stanford campus. General admission tickets are $25.
