Inside Lower Fillmore’s Turk + Taylor Pop-Up Shop

By

Over the weekend, we had a chance to stop by the Turk + Taylor Pop-Up Shop that opened recently along a stretch of lower Fillmore Street that’s fast becoming a hub for edgy San Francisco fashion with an independent streak.

Two doors down from The Brooklyn Circus (which just celebrated its one-year anniversary in The City) and adjacent to Harputs Market, the first standalone retail venture from Turk + Taylor designers Andrew Soernsen and Mark Lee Morris is stocked with a capsule collection for men and women produced exclusively for the temporary store, as well as jewelry by Nous Savons and Where’s Romeo?, Lana handbags, rare and vintage volumes from Mod Lit Books and art by Nick Ackerman.

Moodily dark painted walls, stark lighting picked up at local thrift shops and draped fabric on one side make the many brightly-hued items stand out all the more in the store space, which occupies a former pizza joint vacant since its previous tenants unceremoniously ripped their weighty ovens out of the kitchen, busted up the front doorway and disappeared under the cover of night over a year ago, or so the story goes.

But the damaged exterior you’ll find flanking the shop’s sign-free entrance only adds to the allure, says Soernsen:

“I love that the facade is just boarded up.... I kind of like that it’s this diamond in the rough. There’s something almost insider-y or club-like about it.”

Peruse the racks for Turk + Taylor’s latest offerings: tailored apparel for men and women, as well as summer shorts and popular t-shirt designs from past collections in new signature hues such as avocado, acid green and pale aqua. But don't delay. Just like summer, this won't last long....

Turk + Taylor Pop-Up Shop, 1529 Fillmore St., is open Friday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. through the end of August.
