Since last we featured women’s wear designer Sara Shepherd as part of 7x7’s esteemed Style Council in 2008, the local talent has been busy teaching fashion design and pattern making and sewing part-time at the Academy of Art and producing her gorgeous Spring/Summer 2009 collection. If you’re lucky, you may have already gotten a sneak peek of her latest concoctions at Global Green’s annual Gorgeous and Green benefit, where she previewed some of her impeccably tailored pieces on the SF catwalk. We recently caught up with the Brit-born Shepherd, who gave us insight into her inspirations and her love of mixing the old with the new.

What inspired your Spring/Summer 09 collection?

"I researched my family history and drew inspiration from the culture, backgrounds and various places my family member lived—England, Germany and India."


What is your favorite piece from the collection?

"The skirt and blouse pictured are probably my favorite pieces. There is a sense of 'old school' about them, but with a modern twist."


How is this collection a departure from your fall collection?

"We have continued to pay close attention to great fit and superb finishes, but there has been a greater focus on the design details and elements that make the clothes unique."


Have you moved to Soma yet or are you still in the Outer Sunset?

"Yes, [my husband and I] moved to SoMa about two months ago, to a house that was built in 1907. It's been renovated and converted into two apartments (with a garage and a back garden!). It still has all original hardwood floors and so much character. We love it—and there's even enough room for my studio."

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

"A very large cup of coffee!"
