Scenes of the City: Demolition of the Bay Bridge Begins

Contractors began the six-week process of dismantling the upper deck of the old Bay Bridge two-mile eastern span. 

What's being removed? About seven million tons of asphalt, concrete and steel will be removed and recycled. The cost of demolition is estimated at approximately $280 million and the 77-year old bridge could take up to three years to completely dismantle.
