On any given weeknight, you can find a motley crew of bike polo players hanging out in the Mission at Jose Coronado Park at 21st and Shotwell. Tuesday nights are beginners' nights, but the rest of the week you can find some tough hard-court playing going on. What seems like a simple game of three on three (on a rectangular court, with a goal at either end), gets a bit more complicated when you're riding a bike and trying to hit the ball into the goal. Oh yeah, and you can't touch the ground with your feet.

According to polo players in the park, the modern version of bike polo originated in Seattle in the early 2000s, and has since spread all over the world. Find out more about the local scene here and enjoy the photos.
