Giant Bicycle Party This Sunday!

Giant Bicycle Party This Sunday!

By

Bike lovers, grab your favorite steed and your wish list for all things bicycle, and pedal on over to Winterfest, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s giant bike party this Sunday.

For 17 years, the Coalition has been throwing this bike celebration. More than 1,200 bike-loving locals attended last year, and this year is expected to be just as big. With more 25 bikes up for auction, you’ll have a good chance of scoring a sweet new ride.

Plus, there’s a kicking art show with a ton of bike-centric pieces. I’m pretty sweet on the gorgeous photo of cyclists riding Twin Peaks. Shopping for your bike-loving sweetie or friend? There’s lots of bike schwag—like bike t-shirts and bags—for under $25.

If you don’t have enough holiday dough for the auction bidding (I hear ya, rents are crazy), there’s still plenty of bike fun to be had. Hop on a bike and run the pedal-powered stage. Or challenge your friends to a raucous game of pin the pedals on the bike or super sharrow croquet.

Plus, and maybe I should have mentioned this earlier, there’s beer and wine—lots of it. For $20 you can get a commemorative glass and fill it for free all night long. There’s ginger beer, too. And food by bike a plenty.

It’s been a great year for San Francisco biking, and the 12,000 members of the SF Bicycle Coalition and the rest of the everyday riders have a lot to celebrate. So, join them in celebrating an awesome 2012. And make sure that 2013 is even better. All proceeds go to support the nonprofits work to make San Francisco a terrific place to bike.

If you’re looking for more philanthropic bike holiday fun—take part in Supermarket Street Sweep on Saturday. Join other bikers in racing around the city to pick up pannier and cargo bikes full of food to be donated to the food bank.

Winterfest: Sunday, December 2, City View at the Metreon, 6-10:30pm, $25 for SF Bicycle Coalition members; $50 for nonmembers, but includes a membership. Or volunteer for free entry. Tickets and info at sfbike.org/winterfest.
