Foodie Agenda: Big Winners, Cronots and More

Starting this week

We’re all about magical sandwiches here in the city, and Bar Jules has just announced the return of “The London Gentleman” to their menu. Available for Saturday lunches through August, “The London Gentleman” is an artisan, grilled ham and cheese with an eggy dijonnaise relish. They like to call it a combination of a ham and cheese sandwich and an egg salad, but there’s only one way to find out for sure — by checking it out for yourself, before the last month of summer is over. @ 609 Hayes St. Lunch is served 11:30 – 2:30 pm. Sandwich sticker price is $15. Call 415-621-5482 for a reservation.

You may have caught wind of the Cronut craze in New York, where Dominique Ansel sells his donut-croissant combination treats that have people sleeping outside his bakery to be first in line. The craze has finally reached the Bay with Posh Bakery’s “Cronot” — a version of the hybrid that comes in four flavors: glazed, chocolate, strawberry, and cinnamon. As of Monday, specific SF retailers received their first deliveries of the Cronot. The best place to check them out? The four Lee’s Deli locations that are signed up for Cronots — 222 Front, 235 Montgomery, 170 Spear and 75 Battery streets. Sold at select Posh Bakery retailers, including above locations.

August 8

You may have thought the best of summer was over, but the 2013 James Beard Awards: The Bay Area’s Big Winners beg to differ! It’ll be a celebration of our local heroes who took home food world's equivalent to an Oscar. This three-part event will start with a reception for the awardees that include Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski of State Bird Provisions who won Best New Restaurant in the country, Christopher Kostow from the Restaurant at Meadowood who won Best Chef West, and Michael Mina, who was inducted into the Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America, and many more! All guests will be able to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres inspired by these amazing winners, but only 25 guests will get to join the dinner after the panel about how amazing food is in San Francisco. You don’t need to tell us! @ The Commonwealth Club, Thurs. Aug 8 from 6 – 8 pm. Tickets here.

August 11

Say hello to a brand-new local beer: Summer Sumac Ale. We love beer, but not as much as Craftsman Brewing Company or St. Vincent Tavern and Wine Merchant; they love beer so much, they’ve collaborated to launch new beer and throw a party for it. If you’re itching for a taste of the new brew, grab your ticket for one of their two evening slots to not only meet Summer Sumac, but also nab a seat at their special menu dinner composed around some of Craftsman’s best. Aug. 11 at either 6 pm or 8:30 pm at St. Vincent Tavern and Wine Merchant. Purchase tickets here.
