Foodie Updates: Luella Becoming Stones Throw, City Tavern Becoming Sabrosa, and More

In this week's restaurant bulletin we have the impending closure of Luella on Russian Hill, tonight's closure of Canteen on Lower Nob Hill, and updates about two new spots coming to Cow Hollow. 


First off, Luella (1896 Hyde Street at Green) announced earlier this week that they are closing after nine years, and today brings word of the cozy spot's replacement, which will be called Stones Throw (no apostrophe). As the Inside Scoop reports, it's a project of some Michael Mina vets, headed up by former Mina GM Ryan Cole and chef Jason Halverson. Also involved are Fat Angel owners Jason Kirmse and Cyrick Hia. They're aiming for an air of "neighborhood approachability" along the lines of some of the greatest hits of the last few years, like Nopa and Frances. Expect a late fall opening. [Inside Scoop]

Next up, over in Cow Hollow, we have news about the former City Tavern space (3200 Fillmore), where Redford owners Hugo Gamboa and Adam Snyder, along with Andy Wasserman who's a partner with them in the nearby Brixton, are opening a Mexican spot called Sabrosa. The chef is Jose Ramos, who was an opening chef at Nopalito and recently earned a Bauer rave at tiny Nido in Oakland. It should open later this year. [Eater, Inside Scoop]

Right next door is another new spot, the Cafe Claude spinoff dubbed Cafe Claude Marina. Look for that to open this fall as well. 

And in the vicinity, Cedar Hill Kitchen & Smokehouse (3242 Scott Street) has shuttered after less than two years. There's no word yet on whether there's a taker for the space, but the owners (who also own the Rib Whip BBQ trucks) had indicated earlier that they were waiting for someone to buy them out before they closed. And just a reminder, tonight is the last night for Canteen, which is calling it quits after a good eight-year run at 817 Sutter Street. We're sad to see it go, and we had some great meals there, but, alas, chef/owner Dennis Leary earlier announced that he's ready to move on and focus on his other businesses. [SFist]
