Four Reasons to Get on Your Bike This Month

Four Reasons to Get on Your Bike This Month

By

May is National Bike Month, and San Francisco will celebrate the two-wheeled movement in style. From lectures on bikes and design, to group rides for foodies to the biggest biking day of them all—Bike to Work Day—there are so many fun reasons to hop on your bike this month.

Here are four great events to encourage you to leave your car or Muni pass at home and get on two wheels:

  1. Bike to Work Day, May 9: Even if you’re an everyday bike rider, Bike to Work Day is a special day. Thousands of people will pedal to the office, and all eyes will be on San Francisco’s growing two-wheeled movement. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition will have 26 Energizer Stations set up around the city, so pedal by one and pick up some sweet schwag, info and high-fives. And pedal by the new, real-time, Copenhagen-style Bike Counter which will be unveiled on Market Street.

  2. Bike + Design Lecture, beginning May 8: Design geeks, take note—there’s a great three-part series on bikes and design starting next week. Organized by the Industrial Designers Society of American and Calfornia College of the Arts, this lecture series welcomes some of the biggest names in bike design to talk about the history, technology and design of bikes. And if the lecture series inspires you to take the workshop yourself, sign up for the Build Your Own Bike Frame class here.

  3. Tour de Marin, May 26: Marin County may be the birthplace of mountain biking, but it also has some of the best road biking in the world. Explore the gorgeous area on this casual-paced, 40-mile bike ride that takes in ocean views, Redwood forests and Marin’s quaint towns on this no-drop ride. There’s food aplenty on this ride, with artisan cheese and local food along the way. Sign up here.

  4. Tour du Fromage, May 26:  Speaking of cheese and bikes—this month is the annual and ever-popular Tour du Fromage. Explore the fromage frontier with Other Avenues’ cheesemonger, JB Rumburg. This all-day ride explores every nook of the city to find the best cheese shops, stopping along the way to talk to cheesemongers and sample their wares. This ride fills up quickly, so sign up today
