Last week, California's own Lagunitas Brewing Company released a new, super special batch of SuperCritical Ale, an IPA that's been brewed with Yakima's finest hops and...cannabis extracts.
The beloved local brewers teamed up with another Sonoma business, the family-owned business CannaCraft, makers of AbsolutXtracts vape cartridges, to debut a one-of-a-kind brew rich with cannabis terpenes. What are those, you ask? Terpenes are the fragrant, aromatic oils that are secreted through a plant's glands (both cannabis and hops produce unique terpenes). They are not only responsible for the distinctive taste of cannabis, but some of the most common terpenes (including limonene, linalool and myrcene) can also elevate your mood, relieve stress, and encourage deeper sleep.
SuperCritical Ale contains no THC, so as Chicago Tribune reports, if you get a high, it's just the booze. But the cannabis does add to the flavor of the beer: It's "like having notes in a musical scale that you didn't have before," according to the narrator of a video on the SuperCritical webpage.
Supercritical Ale is made with six different kinds of hops in addition to a terpene blend of Blue Dream (sativa) and Girl Scout Cookies (hybrid) selected by brewer Jeremy Marshall. Lagunitas made just one batch of 60 barrels (or 120 kegs) available in California, so if you want to taste this incredibly limited release beer, the time is now.
Here's a short list of where you can find Lagunita's SuperCritical IPA in San Francisco. For a complete list of Bay Area–wide locations, go to lagunitas.com/supercritical.
