Happy Earth Day To You!

Today marks the Anniversary of the first national "Earth Day" demonstrations that occurred throughout the country in 1970. The national rally was so effective, it placed environmental issues on the political agenda and led to the formation of the EPA, and the passing of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. Whether you're a foodie, super-parent or a dedicated philanthropist (or all of the above), there are a number of ways to acknowledge this internationally important anniversary. Click here for a good list of happenings in San Francisco. In celebration of Earth Day 2008, Yahoo! is focusing on one of the most straightforward ways to be “green”: reuse, which the EPA has named the No. 1 most environmentally sound strategy to reduce landfill waste. In 2006, US residents, businesses and institutions produced more than 251 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW), which is approximately 4.6 pounds of waste per person per day! Yahoo will be spotlighting “Free is Good,”which directs readers to the popular reuse site Freecycle as well other groups that enable people to exchange “free” goods with their neighbors. Best of all, from now until May 4, Yahoo will "hide” special prizes in randomly selected reuse groups. These prizes are both sustainable and super-desirable—a Smart car, organic food delivery, eco-resort trip, tickets to a Sheryl Crow concert and other cool local prizes. I have frugal friends who have furnished an entire apartment with Freecycle, and I have used it myself for some of my most demanding design projects (I've scored couches that I then re-covered with beautiful eco-friendly fabric and filled with natural-tapped rubber and wool). This is a great way to save money, get rid of items that might be “old” to you but “new” to someone else, and to keep things from being considered garbage, because as Bill McDonough says, "There is no away." Yahoo will also be launching localized sites in Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Australia. Happy Earth Day ... and happy salvaging!
