Architecture Buff Fest: Hurzog & de Meuron and the Bird's Nest
If you watched the 2008 Summer Olympics last year, you're no doubt aware that a bird's nest can fit a crowd of thousands and a water cube isn't only available in frozen form. The monumental buildings of the Beijing Olympics were as spectacular to behold as those split second finishes and near-defeats. If those first glimpses of contemporary architecture in China piqued your interest, you might want to head to SF's Main Library this Wednesday at 6PM for a screening of Bird's Nest: Hurzog & de Meuron in China, part of the AIA San Francisco Architecture and the City Festival's film series. The documentary follows renowned Swiss architects Hurzog and de Meuron as they begin on two very different projects in China: one, the famed Bird's Nest, the other an entire district in the city of Jinhua that will be home to around 300,00 people. Learn about the architects' methods of contextualization, while also gaining insight into the strategies and expectations of their Chinese clients. Find more information about this and other events from the festival here.
