Tokyo Art Show Saturday, No Red-Eye Required

By

Our trips to Japantown usually entail browsing the books at Kinokuniya, slurping down a bowl of noodles, and maybe a movie at Kabuki. A great day, to be sure – but franky, rather quiet. Breathing some energy into the neighborhood is New People, a four-story slice of Tokyo that opened at Post and Webster several months ago. Inside you'll find a movie theater, art gallery, and goods the likes of which you'll be hard-pressed to find this side of the Pacific (think Harajuku girl costumes, tricked-out plastic figurines, space-age humidifiers, and more).

If you've yet to go, Saturday is the time to explore this hip little haven: It's the opening of Tokyo Creators Market, an exhibit featuring work by seven celebrated Japanese artists. In conjunction with the event, New People and Bazaar Bizarre are teaming up to bring a slew of kiosks throughout the building filled with handmade items from Asian and Western artists influenced by Japanese pop culture. Look like you went way, way out of your way (we're talking thousands of miles here) to get that perfect, uber-modern art piece for your special someone come the holidays The "Artist Village", as it's being touted, is open for one day only, November 21st from 10AM to 8PM, but the artwork included in the Tokyo Creators Market will be on view through January.
