A lot of people rag on the Outer Avenues. Whatever. The fewer people who know of all the hidden badass spots out there, the better. Take this week's Craigslist Deal for example, located at 29th and Geary in the Outer Richmond. Sure, you could live in the Mission and spend the better part of your weekend in line waiting for a scoop of ice cream to take back to cramped Dolores Park, but doesn't it sound way better to step out your front door and walk to the Legion of Honor, Baker Beach, Sea Cliff, the Presidio, or, of course, glorious Gold Gate Park?
Stow Lake is, hands down, one of my favorite sections of Golden Gate Park. Ever been? It's tucked a little off the main road and far enough into the park to not get a slew of visitors, and it's gorgeous–truly a little oasis of calm in the city. It's a great for a casual walk on a nice day, which is just what I was in the middle of doing a few months back when I stumbled upon a photo shoot. Normally I pass those by–there are a surprising number going on throughout the park on weekdays–but this one featured home decor, so naturally I had to investigate.
California's silhouette is arguably the most recognizable of all the states, what with its long and slender, almost boomerang-like shape. So, unlike any of those square-ish states that are impossible to tell apart when taken outside of map context (I'm looking at you, Wyoming and Colorado), CA's outline is ripe with design possibilities.
It's hard to deny the appeal of charming, tree-lined Dolores, or of the ample array of activities that surround it. This week's Craigslist Deal is located close to the tail end of the street in Noe, and while the vibe here may be more subdued than around 16th, you're still in a prime spot–Dolores at Duncan, if you're wondering–for navigating your way around the area's plethora of diversions.
With a name like Bloodhound, one might think this San Francisco bar would be all old English pomp and pub-dom with hunted deer heads decorating every nook and cranny. But while the distressed wood walls, padded stools, and yes, an antler chandelier or two, might call to mind the trappings of an ancient hunting lodge, a few modern accents keep the place feeling like a chic den rather than a time warp. It's no secret; I've got a major crush on Heath Ceramics and pretty much everything they put out into the world. The workshops, artist collaborations, and did I mention the tableware? It's all pitch-perfect and highly covetable. And while I'll continue to update my little collection at the snail's pace my budget can afford, anyone out there in the L.A. area now has the opportunity to get there's together at a faster clip–and help out a good cause at the same time. Having painted every room in pretty much every apartment I've lived in, I fancy myself quite handy with a paintbrush. Yet ask me to paint stripes on a wall and watch all the blood drain out of my face. All of that measuring, taping, prepping, painting, drying, and painting again is enough to make this girl throw in the roller. It's like taking all of the mundane aspects of the job and multiplying them by two (or more, depending on the number of colors in your stripes). Read more. . .
There are a number of perks to living in the Castro. You get good weather, a central location with easy MUNI access, great food in the area, and a big park perfect for sunbathing nearby. But let's be real; you want to move there for the nightlife. There's always something going on in this bustling, fun neighborhood, and with this week's Craigslist Deal right smack in the middle of it, you'll be sure not to miss any of the action.
