Foggy weather given you cabin fever? Inspired you to get crafty? Perhaps you've repainted a dresser, repaired an old piece of furniture or re-done a sofa? If so, California Home+Design wants to see it. They're running a contest where the winning "before-and-after" project will be featured in their October issue, which will give you all sorts of DIY cred. Show off your skills here.
This trend has been hanging around for the past few months, but, perhaps because it is such a classic style, it doesn't feel remotely outdated yet. After all, the art of creating a silhouette is as old as time, capturing a person's likeness long before cameras came around.
Is this wretched July over yet? Thankfully there's only a week left, but still, August can't come fast enough. Let's hold out hope that with the new month comes better weather, and summer can really get started around here. With that in mind, this week's Craigslist Deal has the outdoor space you'll need in order to truly take advantage of the long-overdue change in seasons.
Located at Carl and Shrader, this one bedroom is just a block from Cole Valley's main drag. That means you'll be surrounded by great place to eat (Zazie, Eos) and shop (Say Cheese, Cole Hardware), and will be just steps away from the N Judah. The apartment was completely renovated in 2009, meaning the hardwood floors sparkle, the tiles and grout work are clean, and the kitchen is looking good.
The problem with most craft shows is that you usually have to wade through a bunch of unfortunate items in order to get your hands on the really good stuff. Luckily, that's never the case with Renegade. The country-crisscrossing fair always manages to gather the cream-of-the-crafty-makers-crop under one roof. And with free admission, tasty snacks and plenty of activities, it's become a must-attend event to look forward to every year.
Isn't it funny when you're looking for something and it turns out to be right under your nose? Big thanks to Joy from Oh Joy! for posting about Anzfer Farms, a workshop located not two neighborhoods over from mine, which had so far managed to fly under my radar. Their beautiful home furniture and accessories are all made from reclaimed wood, and are exactly the rustically charming style I've been coveting of late.
All you treasure hunters will be happy to know that there's a new flea market on the block. And you don't have to cross any bridge for it. The maiden voyage of the Candlestick Park Antiques & Collectibles Faire embarked yesterday on what we hope to be a long-lived Sunday happening. There are over 500 booths selling antiques and collectibles twenty years or older.
Want to live in the city yet still enjoy the warm weather one typically associates with July? Of course you do; even the most seasoned S.F. veterans can’t help but feel shocked when the calendar's on summer but the look outside clearly shouts February. The solution: Bernal Heights. Tucked into a southern tip of S.F., on the warm side of Twin Peaks with a whole (Noe) valley in between as buffer for any wayward fog, this beacon of warmth is the place to go for your best chance at sun in the city. Sadly though, rent has steadily been climbing by leaps and bounds in this neighborhood for the past couple of years and shows no sign of slowing down soon. That’s why today’s Craigslist Deal is about as special as an 80º Saturday in July.
I've been flexing my green thumb lately, taking advantage of the good weather to get out and get planting. My tiny balcony is now crammed to bursting with shrubbery and herbs. The very short supply of free space indoors holds pots of every shape and size. There's nowhere left to go really, except up.
