Sons & Daughters: Designed by the Whole Family

When is comes to cooking, many of us try and recreate homey dishes “just like mom used to make.” But for Matt McNamara and Teague Moriarty, who serve up a next generation menu at their San Francisco restaurant Sons & Daughters that mixes classic French technique, molecular gastronomy and a little rebellious reconfiguring of local, seasonal ingredients, Mom’s casserole didn’t make it anywhere near the kitchen. In this case, what mother knew best was design.

H.D. Buttercup Comes to San Francisco

What with holidays and all, it plum slipped my mind that one of the best home shopping destinations in California – H.D. Buttercup – would be setting up shop right here in San Francisco. The 4th Annual Bazaar Bizarre Holiday Fair Comes to Fort Mason This Weekend

If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of a reindeer sweater, you know how important it is to find the right gift, which is preferably unique and, as an added bonus, locally made. Thanks to the fourth annual Bazaar Bizarre Holiday Fair, you won’t have to spend days scouring the city. The plethora of quality vendors—many of them Etsy shop owners—are selling everything from handmade pork chop plushies and beetles on bicycles to mustachioed Ts and robot sculptures made from scrap metal. It’s free during the day, but for $10 on Saturday night, you can shop with a cocktail in hand. Dec. 11–12; Fort Mason Herbst Pavilion, bazaarbizarre.org

Craigslist Deal of the Week: $1500 Downtown Studio

There's no place like the city for the holidays. The lights, the shopping, the general disgruntledness replaced with cheer — it's magic. In that spirit, I couldn't help but home in on this sharp little studio. True, it's borderline 'Loin territory, but don't let that deter you, as it's also borderline Downtown.

Vue Watch: Yves Behar and Issey Miyake

Yves Behar has been busy. The exhibition he curated at YBCA, “Tecnocraft,” just wrapped up, and his new Sayl task chair for Herman Miller is one hot-ticket item. His latest design gives us some insight into how he keeps on top of his busy schedule: his just created the Vue watch, which he designed in partnership with Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake.

The watch is both ethereal and minimalist, and like most of Behar’s projects, unexpectedly affordable (models range from $400–500). And you can get your hands on one on Wednesday, December 15 at the official product launch at Propeller in Hayes Valley, where Behar himself will be on hand to discuss his design process, show prototypes and autograph watches.

Furniture & Housewares Galore @ Estate Sale This Weekend In Oakland

I've heard that when people lose it all in a catastrophe, material goods become either irrelevant or paramount. When the couple who owned this Piedmont estate had their former home and possessions go up in flames during the Oakland Hills fire of '91, they decided to recreate the good life in a new house. The trappings of that existence are for sale this weekend. The estate sale is located at 25 Wildwood Gardens (a neighborhood that feels like a gated community, although it is not) in the charming Mediterranean dwelling where the husband and wife rebuilt their household.
