Your wedding is your Big Day—this makes it the perfect moment to show off your personality and tastes as a couple. Trends making the rounds this year include onsite illustrators and customized 3D cake toppers, but perhaps nothing feels as fresh as a bit of bud to go with the bubbly.
Cannabis has officially crossed into lifestyle territory, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the Bay Area, where you can partake at secret underground dinners, industry conventions, and limb-loosening yoga classes. If you think cannabis weddings are just an excuse for a stoney couple to hold an extravagant group smoke session, reconsider: Just as there is an industrial complex composed of every kind of vendor to support every kind of traditional wedding, there are increasingly plenty of options for cannabis lovers to host formal or casual, elegant or quirky, and intimate nuptials that also celebrate their love for this particular botanical wonder.
Themed invitations and wedding favors, cannabis-infused appetizers and desserts, and signature strains in place of signature cocktails are just a few ways couples are infusing cannabis into their festivities. Like any wedding, these things require planning.
The Wedding Planner: Cannabis Wedding Expo
This week (on April 30th), more than 50 wedding and cannabis vendors will gather at the Westfield's Bespoke event space for what is being called the first-ever cannabis wedding expo in the state of California. As at any wedding-planning event, you can sample (unmedicated) foods from caterers, get hair and makeup demos, and talk face-to-face with various photographers, florists, officiants and more about your vision for your day. You don't have to have an MMJ card to attend, but all guests must be 21 and up. // Saturday, Apr. 30, 11am to 4pm at Bespoke at Westfield San Francisco Centre, 845 Market St., Level 4 (SoMa); $10 tickets at cannabisweddingexpo.com.
The Fashion: Smokies Toke Couture
Pilar Johnson started her San Francisco–based brand in 2012 when she noticed there was a void in the industry for quality cannabis-inspired accessories. While wearing a pot leaf necklace or barrette to your wedding might sound a little high, some of Johnson's handmade items—including cannabis leaf earrings, pendants, cuff links, and money clips ($8 to $100)—have a kind of sweet, vintage vibe. Of course, you'll also find suitably stoner gifts for your wedding party and guests: Grab a round of "Best Buds" tees, "Freshly Baked" aprons, and customized stash jars. // etsy.com/shop/SmokiesTokeCouture
The Magazine: Love and Marij
Think of this as Brides magazine for stoners. Love and Marij is go-to website for all things related to cannabis weddings. Here you'll find tips for how to host a bud or vape bar at your reception, recipes for infused treats, advice from experts, party favors, and more. Plus, get inspiration from couples who've successfully pulled off cannabis weddings and ogle their pretty pictures. // loveandmarij.com
The Venue: Terra Gallery & Events
Well known in the city as a wedding and events venue for modern party planners and art lovers, Terra is open to hosting your cannabis wedding (from ceremony to reception) in its two-level, 24,000 square-foot space. You can bring your meticulously crafted bud bouquet and wow your guests with some fancy nug centerpieces at the reception, but you and your guests will have to step outside on Terra's patio to indulge in any smoking or vaping. Expectedly, there are details and legal concerns that need to be addressed with the venue, but the team at Terra is openminded. One thing is certain: Until recreational use goes fully legal in 2018, all guests who plan to partake must bring their MMJ cards. // Terra SF, 511 Harrison St. (SoMa), terrasf.com
