Inspired by gravity, Nice Collective’s fall 2011 line updates the label’s edgy utilitarian looks with windproof details fashioned from repurposed military parachutes—a clever new spin on down-to-earth style. It’s an MO that designers Joe Haller and Ian Hannula take quite seriously: They don’t primp in front of mirrors (“Why look for trouble?” asks Haller), and they aren’t precious about their clothes. No label is exempt from their DIY modifications. With pet tarantulas, snakes, and iguanas creeping around their Dogpatch studio, the duo’s signature pieces—rugged combat boots, knee-patched trousers, and hybrid hoodie-coats—aren’t just of-the-moment. They’re regulation attire for living in the wild.
