Saison's chef Joshua Skenes prepping in the kitchen

In the ongoing trend of chefs thinking outside the box, Saison—a Sunday night “restaurant” put on by Kris Esqueda, former Michael Mina sommelier Mark Bright and chef Joshua Skenes—has been luring diners from all over the city to a urban-cool space tucked behind the Stable Café in the Mission District.

Foodies looking for an experience that they'll never forget come here to see what happens when a fine-dining chef takes over an informal kitchen and gallery space in the Mission District (directly behind Stable Cafe) on weekends. Huddling outside the outdoor heat lamps while waiting for your table inside in the compromise you might have to make. On warm nights, take advantage of the garden patio.

Eats:What's on your menu.:
The "restaurant" put on by Mina (as in Michael) Group alumnus chef Joshua Skenes and sommelier Mark Bright is casual when it comes to service but the food is star quality, with a new menu each week, with such food as sublime uni soup, beautifully presented liver mousse and honey-roasted squab. If you choose to reserve a seat at the chef's table—an affair that puts you two steps from the stoves as well as the dishwashers—you might even be served by Skenes himself.

This little kiosk, permanently parked in the lobby of 101 Second St., resembles a hot dog cart from afar. But a closer inspection reveals that the offerings from this mobile operation, owned by former Michael Mina chef Joshua Skenes (who also runs the weekly pop-up restaurant, Saison), are not your average cart fare.

Eats:What's on your menu.:
A daily-changing selection of sandwiches satisfy downtown office drones, who stop by for a weekday lunch. The turkey confit, spread with fig jam and stacked with fresh mozzarella and watercress, is a more refined version of the post-Thanksgiving “gobbler” sandwich; the vegetarian niçoise combines all the requisite ingredients, save for tuna. Side dishes include smoky baba ganoush or hummus (served with crispy crackers), and a potato salad enriched with aïoli. Don’t leave without a freshly baked walnut-chip cookie.
