Knife Classes and Cocktail College: This Week's Top Events


1. Heart to Heart
Kick off your weekend by attending the sixth annual Food From the Heart event at the Ferry Building, an evening of music, dancing, food and wine. This year, entertainment comes in the form of gypsy jazz, Tango and a classical music quartet—sample small plates from $2 to 4 per taste and wine pours from $4 to 6. She’ll be at the bookstore on February 14 from 2 to 3 p.m..

3. Fish Forever
Sushi-loving environmentalists should pick up a copy of Casson Trenor’s new book, Sustainable Sushi: A Guide to Saving the Oceans One Bite at a Time. His excellent book is a must-read reference guide for eco-minded uni lovers. Trenor will be signing copies of the book on February 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Red Hill Books in Bernal Heights. 4. Singular Sensation
On February 17, Conduit is teaming up with “virtual winery” Lioco for a four-course, five-wine dinner showcasing Lioco’s single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The dinner is $85; to make reservations call 415-552-5200.

5. A Real Cut-up
Want to wield a knife like a pro? On February 17, chef Morgan Maki (formerly of Quince) will be teaching a knife skills class at 18 Reasons. The two-session class commences on February 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. then continues the following Tuesday, February 24 at the same time. Learn about knife safety, cutting techniques and basics in the first class, then return to learn how to mince, brunoise, dice and julienne with the best of them. The two-session class is $40 for members, $50 for non-members.

6. Drink Tank
