look of the week

It's no secret that we've been anxiously awaiting spring for quite some time now, September to be exact.

Well the wait is finally over and we're beyond excited to start trying out the looks we fell head-over-heels for over during Fashion Week, from mixed prints to Americana. We're particularly elated that the trends that are popping up in boutiques and our favorite fast-fashion destinations are classic enough to stay relevant for seasons to come!

With the nation's largest Asian American Film Festival kicking off today in our fair city, we couldn't help but be reminded of the brilliant Asian-influenced fashion that has been popping up on and off the runway for spring.

Whether you fancy a more literal translation with a brocade silk jacket or a dash of Geisha-inspired style with a kimono wrap dress, there's no better time to head to Chinatown and Japantown to pick up unique authentic pieces that will add an au courant touch to your wardrobe staples.

With the Academy of Friends' Gala and the Oscars on our mind, we can't seem to stop fantasizing about getting dressed to the nines. Though sadly we don't get the chance to attend nearly as many extragavant black-tie affairs as we'd like, when the time comes we're always plagued with how to look fab without maxing out our credit cards.

We hate to have to tell you this, but it's supposed to be another wet weekend. That said, there's no reason to cancel your plans and stay home with takeout and the remote or risk fighting everyone in SF for a taxi.

Instead, we suggest coercing your friends to come to you with a good old-fashioned dinner party. Not only does it give you a chance to show off your latest and greatest dish, chances are you'll save money and most importantly, stay dry.

And since what to wear at such an occasion is always up for debate, we decided to show you what we'd show up in:

We don't know about you, but a week of rooting for Team U.S.A. in the Winter Olympics has us feeling unusually patriotic. And while we're perpetually on the edge of our seats waiting to see what Johnny Weir twirls around in next, we found sartorial inspiration in all-American style that's more Ralph Lauren than pink-trimmed latex. With that, this week's look:

1. H81 Pleat Pocket Plaid Shirt, 19.90

Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to get all dolled up whether you're headed out for a night on the town or staying home for a more intimate evening.

When searching for an ensemble that's sure to get hearts racing, we steered clear of the clichéd reds and pinks associated with the sugar-coated holiday and instead opted for a romantic dress in the perfect shade of winter white. And to play up the sexy silhouette, we topped off the look with edgy accessories and the most adorable ring we've ever seen.

Now knock 'em dead.

Once a year we put aside our differences with pro football for a day of beer-drinking, commerical-watching, and wing-eating better known as Super Bowl Sunday.

Don't get us wrong, it's not so much the game that we don't enjoy, it's the oversized jerseys that the die-hard fans tend to wear and the loud drunkenness in overstuffed sports bars that turn us off. That's why we decided to put together a cute and comfortable (helloooo nachos!) outfit that will look fab no matter which team you're cheering on.

It's the New Orleans Saints v. Indianapolis Colts by the way.

Look of the Week: IndieFest

Though we like to think of ourselves as relatively hip, the three-week independent music and film extravaganza known as IndieFest never fails to school us on the latest bands and movies on the brink of making it big.

As much as we'd love to stay holed up on the couch as the city turns into Waterworld, unfortunately the show must go on...which means you have to get dressed. For this week's look, we sought out classic wardrobe staples that will look equally chic, as winter showers make way for spring flowers (though we don't recommend wearing galoshes in the sunshine).

From a covetable trench to sailor stripes to rubber motorcycle boots that support AIDS research, we're certain donning this adorable ensemble will cure even the gloomiest of moods:

As much as we love getting dressed to the nines to peruse the seemingly endless art galleries on First Thursday, the fabulous SFMOMA openings have remained elusive...until now. In honor of their 75th anniversary, SFMOMA is opening the floodgates to members and non-members (sadly, we fall into this category) alike to ogle what's sure to be one of the best collections we've ever seen, gratis.
