Greetings meat lovers,

(Vegetarians can stop reading now.)

Sparks, Nevada near Reno is the host town this weekend for the Best of the West Nugget Rib Cook Off featuring tiptop rib cooks from across America. Now in its 19th year, this is regarded as the rib cook events of all rib events.

Ribs, ribs, ribs and more ribs. Yes folks people travel from far away just to show up here and eat!

The Rib Eating Contest

On Wednesday night, The Nugget hosted the World Champion Rib Eating Championship. The award went (again) to San Jose’s Joey Chestnut, the gustatory gladiator—he ate more than seven pounds of ribs in 12 minutes. I asked Joey after if he had room for dessert. “Hell no. I’ll take a beer though” was his response. He went home with a full stomach, a trophy and $2,500 in prize money.  One guy, known as “the locust” lost a tooth in his bid to take Joey’s crown. These gastronomic gobblers are so dedicated.

The Rib Cook Off
Each cook is given the same meat, and they are awarded prizes by a judging panel based on taste, flavor and texture. It’s all about the rub and the sauce on the meat. I had the joyful task of tasting each and every entry—yes, I am ribbed out and don’t want to see another one until I do this all over again next year.

Want to venture to the rib cook off? Find info and directions here. The festivities continue through Labor Day. If you love ribs, believe me it is worth the five-hour drive to Reno.

RIB-TASTIC.

Cheers,
Liam
