Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink for Cheap (or Free) This Week

Each week, we bring you our top picks for the best places to booze on the cheap in SF.

1. James Brown Dance Party: There's never a bad time to get down to the stylings of the Godfather of Soul, and the best time is probably after a few drinks. In an act of beneficence, Noble SF is throwing a pre-party for funk-jazz trio Soulive's performance at the Fillmore, complete with a DJ spinning James Brown tunes and a hosted bar. All you have to do is sign up for the guest list. There aren't +1s for this event, so be sure to have your friends sign up too. (Thursday, May 12, 8 pm-12 am, at Noble SF, 600 Polk St., Tenderloin.)

2. Bike to Work Day at Beach Chalet: Even if you don't bike to work on Bike to Work Day, consider biking to booze: Beach Chalet is extending its happy hour all night for those who show the bartender their bike helmet. Burn a few calories on a trip through Golden Gate Park to make the most of the $3 house-brewed beer, $6 wine and cocktails, and snacks from $3-9. (Thursday, May 12, 3 pm-10 pm, at Beach Chalet, 1000 Great Highway, Ocean Beach.)

3. Rescue Dog Days at Show Dogs: Show Dogs' bi-weekly series of all-you-can-eat-and-drink parties continues, with KEEN, a charity for people with developmental disabilities, as the latest recipient. $20 buys two hours of unlimited sausages, sides, microbrews, and wine. There are four more Rescue Dog events on the way; to see the dates and charities, check out the restaurant's Facebook page. (Wednesday, May 11, 6-8 pm, at Show Dogs, 1020 Market St., Mid-Market.)

4. Trumer Pils' B2B Pit Stops: As always, the city and organizers are threatening a complete and total crackdown on booze at Bay to Breakers. (Really. It's gonna happen this time. Probably.) To counter the potential buzzkill, Trumer Pils is stepping up with nine "Pit Stop" happy hours along the route, primarily clustered on Haight St. Nickie's, Underground SF, Mad Dog in the Fog, Cafe International, and Noc Noc will rep for the Lower Haight, while Hobson's Choice, Milk, Trax, and the Kezar Pub will provide firepower for the Upper. (The photo booth at Milk will be gratis, if you want to capture that costume.) All of them will have drink specials and giveaways, and promo folks along the route will also be giving out $1 off wristbands for beer, so keep an eye out. (Sunday, May 15, 8 am-12 pm, along Haight St. from Webster to Stanyan.)

5. Bay to Breakers After-Party: If you're not totally tanked, tired, and sunburned by the end of the Bay to Breakers course, Zazzle's official after-party should drain you of any remaining pep. The $5 cover includes live music, DJs, and access to $3 cocktails until 5 pm. They'll also have some food trucks on the scene to replenish your nutrients. (Sunday, May 15, 3 pm-12 am, at Public Works SF, 161 Erie St., Mission.)
