Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink for Cheap (or Free) This Week

By

Each week, we bring you our top picks for the best places to booze on the cheap in San Francisco.

1. Half-Price Wine at Lark Creek Restaurants: A bottle of wine with dinner is always enjoyable, but the price tags on local wine lists can often be steep. As a way to encourage more summer imbibing, all of the Lark Creek restaurants in SF (that's One Market, LarkCreekSteak, and the brand-new Cupola Pizzeria in the Westfield mall) are offering half off their entire wine list in July, with no restrictions. Go ahead, order a whole bottle. (Month of July, at One Market, 1 Market St., Embarcadero; and LarkCreekSteak and Cupola Pizzeria, Westfield San Francisco Centre, 845 Market St., 4th Floor, Union Square.)

2. Half-Off Symphony Tickets with Drink Me: The SF Symphony is celebrating Russian music with the "my classic Russian Favorites" program, featuring compositions by Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Mussorgsky. To celebrate, Drink Me magazine is offering half-priced tickets to the event, along with a free vodka cocktail hour before the concert. Want to attend? Get all the details, along with the discount code for tickets, on their website. Tickets are limited, so act soon for the best seats. (Friday, July 8th, 7 pm, at Davies Symphony Hall, 201 Van Ness Ave., Civic Center.)

3. Industry Happy Hour at Fish & Farm: Fish & Farm, the restaurant that took the Best Burger crown in our 2009 taste-off, has just introduced an all-night happy hour for restaurant- and bar-industry folks. Drink specials include $3 Trumer Pils and half-price featured cocktails, plus a bar menu with cheap eats (yes, the burger's on there). No plans tonight? Swing by to meet the brewers from Trumer, sip on a $3 brew, and take home a complimentary logo glass. (Trumer event: Wednesday, June 29th, 7-9 pm; Happy hour: Daily, 7 pm-close, at Fish & Farm, 339 Taylor St., Tenderloin.)

4. Co-Working and Drinks at NextSpace: Your correspondent writes most of these columns from the comfort of her sofa, and considers it an accomplishment if she's out of her pajamas by noon. If you also work from home, you know the feeling. Want to try out some exposure to other human beings? This Friday (and the first Friday of every month), the co-working office NextSpace is throwing open its doors for a working open house, complete with free drinks at quittin' time. You'll have to contact them to get an entry passcode, so don't plan on attending if you're not actually considering co-working. (Friday, July 1st, working 8 am-5 pm, drinks 4 pm-close, at NextSpace, 28 2nd St., SOMA.)

5. Fillmore Art Walk: The Fillmore's restaurants and galleries are opening up on Friday to showcase their wares-- and provide strolling visitors with a few good deals on drinks. 1300 on Fillmore will have an extended happy hour with $3 beer and sparkling wine, $5 well drinks and selected wines, and half-off appetizers, while Gussie's Chicken and Waffles will be serving up $4 "soulgria," $5 drink specials, and $6 baskets of wings. Sheba Piano Lounge will have a jazz quartet to accompany its $6 appetizers and cocktails, Bruno's Pizzeria will serve up $2.75 Sam Adams and half-price fried ravioli, and Fat Angel will be offering $1 off draft beer and wine and $2 off flatbreads. Whew. (Friday, July 1st, 6 pm-12 am, Fillmore St. between Sutter and Turk.)
