Hitting Bottom: When a Liberal Parent's Hand Meets Her Toddler's Behind

The Bay Area’s liberal politics extend beyond the Keen-sandal-wearing, Prius-driving hippies who run the city councils. There are also strong opinions about the way you should raise your children. Begin with a drug-free birth, carry your baby in a sling, and breast-feed and co-sleep until the kid goes to college. No television, no sugar, no plastic toys, and absolutely no spanking. Make all your own baby food using local organic produce, and don’t put anything on your child’s skin that you wouldn’t put in your mouth.

Wedding We Love: True Blue in Calistoga

Sarah Barnett & Douglas Bria
August 28, 2010 Calistoga

On Doug’s bookshelf, you’ll find The Official Preppy Handbook and The WASP Cookbook, so no one was surprised when he married Sarah (who shares his aesthetic) in a prepster wedding that would put a smile on a Lacoste alligator’s face. It was fitting that their faithful sidekick Cupcake, a white English bulldog, not only walked down the aisle but lay at Sarah’s feet during the vows.

Yep, that was an earthquake. Tweets galore.

"Christmas With Walt Disney" Brings The Iconic Founder Back to Life

If there’s one time of year when you can let the fond memories of Disneyland Christmas parades, Fantasia, and Swiss Family Robinson tug at your heartstrings, it’s now. Starting Nov. 26, the Walt Disney Family Museum presents Christmas With Walt Disney, a film that brings the iconic founder back to life alongside your favorite Disney faces. Directed by veteran filmmaker Don Hahn (known for his work on The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast), the film intersperses rare family footage of Disney himself with clips from the studio’s movies and television specials.

1. Fried chicken sandwich at Showdogs
I’m digesting this as I write, having just scarfed down the perfect fried chicken sandwich ($7.50) from Showdogs (brought to us by the Foreign Cinema folks). Foreign Cinema’s fried chicken has received deserved accolades, but set between two soft buns, topped with cole slaw touched with fresh chilies to give it some heat, and slathered in lemon-cayenne aioli, this sandwich has that soft/hot/crunchy/just a little bit spicy thing going on that is hard to put down. Diet be damned.--Sara Deseran

1. Banana Cream Pie from Mission Pie
I've long heard the banana cream pie is Mission Pie's calling card, so in an effort to keep warm lately, I've been indulging in a couple of shared slices with my boyfriend after dinner.
