The 44th annual Winter Open Studios launches this weekend at the ICB Art Center. Over 80 artists will exhibit sculpture, photography, jewelry and other artwork inspired by the musical theme of 4x4 time, and it all takes place in a historic World War II-era industrial building. There will be live acoustic music and a special group show in Gallery 111 that will highlight the influence of music on art called "Rhythm and Hues." Sat & Sun,10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Industrial Center Building, 480 Gate 5 Road, Sausalito.
It’s your last chance to catch an astronomy program on Mt. Tam before spring of next year. This weekend, Planetologist Dr. Kevin Zahnie talks about the collision of Earth with another world gone wild that caused the extinction of dinosaurs and everything else. (And it could happen again!) The best part of this evening is the opportunity to view through telescopes provided by the San Francisco Amateur Astronomers. Good timing as Jupiter just returned to the night sky and Mercury enters retrograde starting on Monday (watch out!). Rock Springs Parking Lot, Mount Tamalpais (Mill Valley), Sat, 11/3, 7 p.m.
Surf Film Festival
The first-ever Mill Valley Surf Film Festival takes place at the Sweetwater Music Hall this Saturday. Expect an awesome array of surf films that celebrate big wave-riding, the daredevils who do it, and the ocean's beauty. A gathering of local artists, musicians, and ocean-related charities will be present and San Francisco's the Merman will be taking the stage once the last film wraps. Sat 10/20, 12 p.m. - 10 p.m. 19 Corte Madera Ave, Mill Valley.
Ghost Town Tour in Santa Rosa
Bicycle + Beers + Oktoberfest
Jump on two wheels or take the ferry up to Larkspur, no matter how you do it, head over to Biketoberfest. Dozens of breweries will be pouring and 70+ bike exhibitors will be showcasing their wares. The SF Bike Coalition will be leading a slow-paced ride up there (leaves from the Ferry Building at 9:45 a.m.). Saturday, Oct. 13, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. $25 advance, $30 day of event, FairAnselm Plaza 765 Center Blvd. Fairfax.
Beer and bicycles don’t always mix, but this weekend is a notable exception. Marin’s Biketoberfest offers bicycling beer lovers a chance to burn off as many calories as they consume.
Located in Fairfax, Biketoberfest is a relatively flat, 20-mile ride from downtown SF. If you prefer to ride with friends, join the SF Bicycle Coalition’s casual-pace group cruise from the Ferry Building at 9:45 a.m.
Mill Valley Film Festival
Marin's Oscar-feeding celebrity-packed 35th year just opened and runs through Oct 14. It boasts a massive slate of much-hyped spectacles like Holy Motors, The Sessions, and Argo and guests ranging from Stevie Nicks to Dustin Hoffman. Check out the schedule and buy tickets here.
Visit the Marine Mammal
If the weather gods are correct, we are getting a hefty dose of summer this weekend, which means Marin will be hot hot HOT! Take advantage of the one or two days of the year when a dip in the Bay or the ocean doesn’t seem like an outrageous proposition.
