Mill Valley Film Festival
Marin's Oscar-feeding celebrity-packed 35th year just opened and runs through Oct 14. It boasts a massive slate of much-hyped spectacles like Holy Motors, The Sessions, and Argo and guests ranging from Stevie Nicks to Dustin Hoffman. Check out the schedule and buy tickets here.
Visit the Marine Mammal
If the weather gods are correct, we are getting a hefty dose of summer this weekend, which means Marin will be hot hot HOT! Take advantage of the one or two days of the year when a dip in the Bay or the ocean doesn’t seem like an outrageous proposition.
Go to the Beach!
Volunteer on the Coast
Saturday is California Coastal Cleanup Day and Marin has dozens of sites where you can participate in beautifying its beaches, bays, trails, and parks. It’s super easy to get involved.
Hike to Stinson Beach
Weekend traffic to Stinson Beach can be a nightmare, especially if the fog decides not to kiss the coast and sunny skies prevail. An alternate way to access Stinson Beach is to hike the Steep Ravine Trail. It’s a real beauty with tall redwoods, lush fern groves, and trickling waterfalls.
About halfway up Tomales Bay, California’s largest unspoiled coastal embayment, Hog Island is well-known among food lovers for its oysters, but the briny bivalves are certainly an acquired taste. Luckily, there is also cheese to be had in the area.
Does anything epitomize the American independent spirit like a road trip? We think not. Plus, if you feel like getting out of town on Fourth of July but don’t yet have plans, it’s not likely you’ll get a hotel room at this point. So hop in the car, head over the Golden Gate and follow all or part of our Marin coast itinerary: from funky hippie parade to gourmet picnic to an expensive, but luxuriously relaxing, view of the SF fireworks.
Planning on winding your way to Stinson Beach this weekend to take advantage of the warm weather? Bring your floaties. They’re predicting huge swells at Marin beaches, the result of a storm coming our way from Japan. Not the best for casual swimming, but it could make for an extremely exciting Mavericks competition, which kicks off...TBD. It's still too close to call.
