Last week, the city’s contemporary and modern art scene was abuzz about ArtMRKT San Francisco. Now, art aficionados can revel at the scores of talented artists taking the stage at San Francisco’s galleries. Don't miss the works by DJ/musician/photographer Reuben Wu, husband and wife duo Michelle Grabner and Brad Killam, award-winning Christine Elfman, and the budding Yuh-Shioh Wong in the coming weeks.
Reuben Wu: Infinite Sustain
Reuben Wu began exploring his interest in photography while on international tour with Ladyton, an electronic band he co-founded in 1999. His travels have taken him to all ends of the earth, such as an abandoned amusement part outside of Beijing and a frozen island between Norway and the North Pole. Though the landscapes he captures seem otherworldly, he amplifies their dreamlike quality by experimenting with light exposure and by adjusting the surface of the photos.
Infinite Sustain runs from May 22 to June 25 at Lot 21 Gallery, 933 20th Street. The opening reception will be hosted on Thursday, May 22 at 6:00 p.m.
Michelle Grabner & Brad Killam: Grabner Killam 2014
Fresh off of co-curating the 2014 Whitney Biennial, Chicago-based conceptual artist and professor Michelle Grabner has paired up with her husband Brad Killam for their sixth exhibition at Gallery 16. Though Grabner is widely known for her metalpoint works and her paintings of textile patterns, she works in variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, video, and sculpture.
Grabner Killam 2014 runs from May 23 to July 30 at Gallery 16, 501 3rd Street. The opening reception and artist talk will be hosted on Friday, May 23 from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m.
Christine Elfman: Fix & Fade
As the winner of the San Francisco Artist Award, Christine Elfman will be featured in Gallery Wendi Norris. The solo exhibition will explore the perils of nostalgia and romanticism while acknowledging the hopelessness of fixing things in time with Anthotype, a photographic process involving photosensitive material from plants, fruits, or vegetables.
Fix & Fade runs from June 5 to August 2 at Gallery Wendi Norris, 161 Jessie Street. The opening reception was hosted on Thursday, June 5 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Yuh-Shioh Wong: Calling Across the Watermelon Field For You
Exhibiting at Anthony Meier Fine Arts for the first time, the Taiwan-native Yuh-Shioh Wong presents a selection of paintings made in Marfa, Texas. This series, like many of her others, centers on light and perspective. She plays with scale, energetic colors, and negative to positive space, to frame her visceral response to the desert landscape on canvas.
