DJ Duo Digitalism Plays Mezzanine Wednesday Night

By

With awkward office holiday parties in full swing and another week with the relatives looming, you just might need a little therapeutic escape to the dance floor. No need to wait for the weekend, the perfect reprieve occurs this Wednesday night at Mezzanine.

Often described as electro house, dance punk, indie electronica, or a combination of the three, Digitalism is on tour to promote their latest album I Love You, Dude. The compilation doesn’t stray far from their 2007 debut album Idealism (which resulted in some mixed reviews); however, any electronica lover won’t deny its addictive, often electrifying, subtly emotional pastiche of tracks.

The German DJ twosome’s sound is a multifaceted one – on one hand, songs like Encore start with a crackling synth melody that leads up to a crescendo of thumping drumbeats, culminating in an effervescent dance ditty.

On the other hand, they manifest versatility on soul-stirring tracks like Just Gazin’, a sweet Air-like tune that layers a flamenco-style guitar riff with an ethereal chorus and a steady bass line that, altogether, evokes such a poignant lyricism it could move you to tears.

At the show, expect plenty of straightforward house tracks, like Forrest Gump and Antibiotics, which, despite not being overly electronically innovative, still make you want to drive fast, run a marathon, or dance your mundane December obligations away.

Digitalism plays live Wednesday 12/14 at Mezzanine, 444 Jessie St. $22 advance tickets, doors at 9 p.m.
