Four Parties to Celebrate the New Year and the End of the World
Juan MacLean
With the world apparently coming to an end very soon, mark these holiday happenings on your calendar (regular or Mayan) and get out there and have some fun. Of course, if the world doesn’t end, expect this column and more dope music to resume in 2013.
Everyone’s favorite midweek dance party, Housepitality, is being taken over by the legendary Sunset crew (J-Bird, Solar and Galen) for a night of long-lasting grooves. Since 1994, Sunset has thrown daytime parties around the Bay Area, most famously their spring opener at Stafford Lake in Marin. This month, it goes down at Icon Lounge in SoMA on December 19th, and with Sean Murray supporting them, it will be just the fix you need to make it to Friday. Free before 11 pm with RSVP. Otherwise, $5 before 11pm, $10 after.
The wild man of DFA Records, Juan MacLean, will play a DJ set alongside the likes of hipster trumpet-house enthusiasts No Regular Play and Nick Monaco for this season's Holiday Bash at Public Works. San Francisco's Bells & Whistles will rep the home team lineup, which includes Gordo Cabeza, Peter Blick and Eug. Proceeds will benefit local Mission nonprofits Root Division and SF Smiles. Expect a packed house on December 22nd. $10-20 at the door. Free drinks from 9-10 pm.
Hurricane Sandy cost billions of dollars in damage to the (in)famous Jersey Shore, so the kind folks at Monarch are throwing Reload Relief to benefit the New Jersey victims of the storm. The party features Dirty Bird Records young gun Ardalan and Nick Monaco. Tyrel Williams, Craig Kuna and Fil Latorre will deliver supporting grooves. Help restore the shore on December 23rd. 9 pm-2 am. Donations at the door.
Another party to catch after the world ends is at 222 Hyde, the best fallout shelter in the Tenderloin. As You Like It will host an ugly holiday sweater party that includes the much of the AYLI musical family. Christina Chatfield will play a live set–this girl definitely knows how to rock a party. Mossmoss and Rich Korach are always a fun time, as is William Wardlaw. Come out in your best ugly holiday sweater (and get half price admission!) and be ready to get down on December 29th. 9 pm-2 pm. 21+ $5 with an ugly sweater, $10 without.
