Jams We Love: 7x7's Weekly Playlist

By

For our column Jams We Love, we're turning you onto the songs that keep us going every day. We'll showcase a new playlist every week so you can start things off right. Today, because holiday shopping season is now in full swing, we put together a bunch of songs related to spending sprees.

1. The Clash, "Lost in the Supermarket"

The Clash tap into their melancholy side with this meditation on the bleaker sides of consumerism, loss of individualism in a world of advertising and the self-awareness that being a commodity is just part of the game when you're bona fide rock stars.

2. Toni Basil, "Shoppin' from A to Z"

This is a more silly, straight-forward take on the crazed headspace you fall into when you're swiping that credit card. After all, when did Toni Basil ever get metaphorical? Favorite lyric: "Satisfy the munchies with an open bag of chips."

3. Gang Of Four, "Damaged Goods"

This was the first single ever released by Gang Of Four, and yes, it's kind of a stretch being included on this list, but sometimes the pressure to get the best gifts for everyone in your life can really wear you down. "Damaged goods, send them back," sings Jon King. "I'm kissing you goodbye." Use this delicious post-punk gem to remind yourself that material gifts aren't always the best way to show your love to someone.

4. The Smiths, "Shoplifters Of the World Unite"

Morrissey shuns the normies and sings the smoothest call to arms ever to those who don't want to do what everyone else does. "Tried living in the real world, Instead of a shell, But before I began....I was bored before I even began"  tempts us to get out of the rat race and trailblaze on our own terms.

5. The Kinks, "Dedicated Follower of Fashion"

This oldie is a tongue-in-cheek ode to the fashion plates in your lives who never settle and only want the best. How's that for a shopping burden?
