Party Blotter: Music To Keep You Dancing All Night
This edition of the Party Blotter features several milestones: the one-year anniversary of a techno party, the first iteration of a new house music night, and the final iteration of Honey Soundsystem’s Sunday night weekly. Oh, and DJ Harvey’s in here, too! Don’t miss out on any of this. See you on the dancefloor!
Hidden Measure is celebrating their one-year anniversary by bringing in Gary Beck, a Scottish heavyweight techno producer. Beck, along with compatriots and frequent collaborators Edit-Select and Mark Broom, is a mainstay of the UK techno scene, crafting hard-driving, pounding-but-melodic beat-heavy tunes. Joining him is Memnok, a new producer from Michigan with a flair for grooving minimal techno, providing a nice counterpoint to Gary Beck’s heft. A bevy of locals will provide DJ support with some lighter vibes played in F8’s back room. Oh, and – there’s free champagne from 9 to 10pm! RSVP on Facebook for more details and purchase presales on Eventbrite. 9pm - late, $18 presales, $25 at the door.
If the throb of purist techno isn’t your thing, No Regular Play should be your choice on Friday night. The NYC-based duo are part of the extended Wolf + Lamb crew, throwing a similar blend of influences into one melting pot: disco, classic house music, modern vocal tech-house, plus a heaping helping of funk and soul. Expect a groovy, cozy and sexy DJ set, with a lot of bounce to the ounce. Local selectors Ghosts on Tape and Kimmy Le Funk will make sure the party keeps bumping into the wee hours. RSVP on Facebook for more details and purchase presales via Ticketfly. 9:30 pm - 3:00 am, $10 presales, $20 at the door.
Play It Cool is a new party in the city, curated by a handful of San Francisco house music aficionados, and their first party is off to a very nice start: they’ve booked Los Angeles’ Lovefingers, a disco freak whose early-00s Black Disco parties were instrumental in reigniting the disco craze and bringing sunny, cosmic Balearic vibes back in vogue. These days his tastes run a little more towards the experimental side of things, so expect an interesting and highly danceable set. The party’s residents – Derek Opperman, Avalon Emerson, Matthew Favorites and Guillaume Galuz – will be spinning forward-thinking house music all night. RSVP on Facebook for more details. 9pm - late, free before 10PM and $5 after.
DJ Harvey (photo by Steve Stills)
Usually, a renowned DJ is renowned within a certain genre – so-and-so is an amazing house DJ, or techno DJ, or disco DJ, or what have you. Occasionally, though, you have the DJ who defies convention, who is known not for mastery of a given genre but rather for throwing out the genre rulebook altogether – DJ Harvey is such a DJ. Harvey has many, many years of DJing tucked under his belt, and a record collection to match, and it’s hard to say exactly where he’ll begin or where he’ll end up, but it’s for certain that the journey will be worth it. He’ll be performing an extended set along with FACE resident Eug, and as always with Harvey’s sets, this one will be a can’t-miss. RSVP on Facebook for more details and purchase presales via Ticketfly. 9:30 pm - 3:30 am, $12 presales, $15 at the door.
HONEY SOUNDSYSTEM’S FINAL WEEKLY PARTY, Sunday October 20, Holy Cow
If you’re a San Francisco partygoer, you probably know Honey Soundsystem, the queer DJ collective who have been setting dancefloors alight for 7 years now (which is practically a century in party years). And if you know Honey Soundsystem, you probably know that they recently announced that their weekly party, consistently one of the best in San Francisco, is coming to an end. They’ll continue to produce one-offs and special events, but Sunday, October 20 marks their final weekly party, and although they haven’t announced a lineup yet, you can rest assured that it’s going to feature extended sets from all the residents (Robot Hustle, P-Play, Josh Cheon, Jason Kendig) and probably a special guest or two. Oh, and it’s gonna go till 4am. Get ready to werk it out and say goodbye to Honey in style. 9pm - 4am, $5 before 10pm, $10 after.
