Green Day Hits The Green to Benefit Music Programs
What are Green Day up to when they're not playing impromptu shows around the Bay? Golfing, apparently. But for a cause. The band hit Sequoyah Country Club in Oakland yesterday to host the third annual Music in Schools Today golf tournament, an event that benefits the music curriculum in the Oakland Unified School District. In addition to Green Day, the local celebrity roster included rock producer Butch Vig (of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins - he's currently producing Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown), musician Eoin Harrington, ESPN poker commentator Lon McEachern and Vinnie from Radio Alice, who all sweated through record heat on a course that definitely saw its share of mulligans. With all the budget cuts in public schools these days (and especially in music programs), the proceeds from this tourney will go a long way to help students appreciate (and maybe even pursue a career) in music. Though given the skill level of the players, they might want to set aside some of that cash for divot-repair.
