The Best Delis in Napa Valley

The Best Delis in Napa Valley

By

When hunger strikes during a wine tasting jaunt to Napa, the area's delis are often your most low-maintenance option. Here are our picks for the best delis in the valley to grab a satisfying bite to stay or to go.

Giugni WF & Son Grocery Co: In the heart of St. Helena, this deli is a community staple and a local lunchtime favorite. A cozy shop packed with chips, drinks and a couple of small tables, the folks at Giugni’s won’t be hurried through an order, but will make you an outstanding sandwich any way you want it. Call in your order or wait in line, but make sure you get plenty “Giugni’s Juice” on your sandwich. Buy a bottle to keep at home, a staple in many local fridges.  1227 Main St, Saint Helena, 707-963-3421. 9am - 4:30pm daily

Sunshine Foods Market: More than just a deli, this local market has everything you need from top-notch wines to some of the freshest fish and steaks in the valley. They also make some of my favorite sandwiches. It’s no secret that the deli department at Sunshine is an expert in their trade, so I'd recommend calling ahead (press 1 for the deli department). Also, grab some cheeses (I never tire of Cypress Grove) from their massive artisanal selection and some fresh bread on your way out the door. 1115 Main Street, St Helena,  707-963-7070, 7:30am to 8:30pm daily

Yountville Deli: This convenient (albeit somewhat sterile) deli makes great sandwiches in a hurry. What they lack in atmosphere they make up for in reasonable price, reliability and ease. Shop for extras at the attached market and play in the quirky candy and toy section while you wait. 6498 Washington Street, Yountville, CA 94599, 707-944-2002, 6am to 3pm daily

Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Company: This is the kind of place that you think no longer exists and once you discover, will want to keep all to yourself. As you squeeze through this tiny place, arms piled high with breads, sauces and Italian treats, you'll feel like you're visiting the Napa of old. They've got picnic tables, so bring some wine and enjoy the weather if you're up here on a nice day.  835 Charter Oak Ave, Saint Helena, 9am to 5:30pm daily

Oakville GroceryOakville Grocery is a great pit-stop to pack a picnic to enjoy at the wineries. Grab made-to order sandwiches, gourmet cheese and charcuterie and specialty items like unique mustards, marinades and handmade preserves. 7856 St. Helena Highway, Oakville, CA 94562, 707-944-8802, 7am - 5pm Mon - Thurs, 7am - 6pm Fri & Sat, 8am - 5pm Sunday

Soda Canyon StoreStop in at Soda Canyon store (also on the Silverado Trail) for some espresso or a fruit smoothie before heading to the vineyards and pick up a delicious box lunch (which comes with a specialty sandwich, homemade salad, cookie and fresh fruit) for a picnic. 4006 Silverado Trail, Napa, CA 94558 707-252-0285, 6am to 6pm Mon-Sat, 7:30am to 5pm Sunday
