Yoda, a Two Pound Chihuahua, Crowned The World's Ugliest Dog

They say beauty's on the inside. That's never been more true than at the 23rd annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest, which took place last night at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair in Petaluma. 29 dogs, mostly from Northern California, competed for the distinction.

But the winner last night was Yoda, a two-pound Chinese crested-Chihuahua cross, whose owners originally thought she was a rat. Yoda won $1,000 and the 2011 crown as the World's Ugliest Dog.

SF SPCA's Case for Dogs at the Office

Today is National Take Your Dog To Work Day. Dr. Jennifer Scarlett at the SF SPCA makes the case for why pups are great for the workplace any day. Here's her rationale:

It's been proving that having animals in the workplace improves morale, boosts relationships amongst employees and increases productivity.

Overall, we know that working in a happy, open and creative environment is good for business – it increases staff retention and decreases absenteeism rates — and you don't have to stress about whether your pup is alright at home.

Is it okay to do that for kitties with arthritis? And what are some other remedies to give her for arthritis pain besides pain medicine?

It's a Hard Knock Life for an Ocean Beach-Loving Dog

My favorite time to walk my dog on Ocean Beach is during a negative low tide, when the ocean pulls back into itself and reveals a wide-open expanse of wet sand. You can walk south towards Fort Funston and basically go forever. It’s even better if it’s just after a rain, because then the beach is empty. Just me and the dog. I love it.

But that’s probably going to change.

Welcome to our weekly 'Ask a Vet from the SF SPCA' feature on 7x7.com. They've enlisted their Co-President, Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, to answer your questions every week. Got a question for Dr. Scarlett? Ask away in the comments!

Q: I have a mature cat (around 12 years old)...he's been experiencing severe cat dander (the worst I have ever seen...lots and lots of flakes all over his coat). At first I thought perhaps he was just getting old because he has up-to-date shots and his flea/tick medicine is current. He is also severely over-weight. We've tried everything to get him to lose weight, but to no avail. Other than his weight his last couple of vet visits have said he's perfectly healthy. Any ideas?
