5 Classic Bay Area Adventures to Add to your Bucket List

5 Classic Bay Area Adventures to Add to your Bucket List

By

These 5 adventures are Bay Area classics, and if they aren't already on your bucket list, it's about time you added them. So rally the crew and start making your plans.

1. Explore Muir Woods

Muir Woods National Monument is easily one of the best redwood groves in the Bay Area. Hike along the wooden footpaths through the forest and you won't believe the size of some of these trees—the tallest come in at over 250 feet and vary between 600-800 years old. Learn more.

Inside Tip: This is an extremely popular destination (we’re talking tour buses), so plan on getting there right when the park opens (8:00am), and before the Visitor Center opens (9:00am). Bring cash and simply place the park fees in the self-service entrance, and enjoy a much less crowded experience.

2. Hike to the End of Pt. Reyes

Head north and hit the Tomales Point Trail, a nine-mile out-and-back path that will take you to the very northernmost point of the Point Reyes National Seashore. One of the less-trafficked trails in the area, you can easily find yourself alone on the trail with only the elk to keep you company. Learn more.

Inside Tip: Try to go on a fogless day or after it’s burned off. This way, you’ll get sweeping views of Tomales Bay and the rugged cliffs lining the coast.

3. Explore The Presidio's Hidden Treasures

We San Franciscans are lucky to have our very own National Recreation Area right here in the city. The Presidio is a beautiful little oasis of forests, beaches, and sweeping views that locals love. Look for some of the incredible natural art installations on your hike. Learn more.

Insider Tip: When you're done exploring, treat yourself to some comfort food and drinks at Liverpool Lil's

4. Cruise The Pacific Coast Highway

Head across the Golden Gate Bridge and continue onto Highway 1 for one of the most scenic drives in the country. The winding road sits hundreds of feet above the rugged coastline and there are endless pit stops along the way from beautiful lookouts to beaches to hiking trails. Learn more.

Insider Tip: If you want to make a weekend out of it and spend the night in comfort, check out the Sea Ranch Lodge for accommodations.

5. Hike To Alamere Falls

This hike to Alamere Falls features a relatively easy-to-moderate 8.4-mile roundtrip hike that includes sweeping coastal views, forests, and a fun summer swimming hole along the way, so you can’t go wrong. The view from the beach looking up at the falls is surreal. It’s hard to believe something so cool exists just a short drive from San Francisco.Learn more.

Inside Tip: If it’s been raining, odds are the trail will be pretty soggy, so be prepared. Make sure you pack some water, a snack, and your camera. There is a short, tricky scramble from the upper falls down to the beach, so take your time and watch your step.
