On Friday, June 19, San Francisco celebrated the 100th birthday of City Hall with a party of epic proportions.
Re-opened in 1915 in San Francisco's newly minted Civic Center, City Hall helped bring the "City Beautiful" architecture movement to SF and laid the groundwork for many of the inspired buildings that make up the city's modern skyline. Principal architect Arthur Brown Jr. kept the original detailing of the building's first blueprints (from before the 1906 earthquake) and strengthened the framework of the dome, now considered the fifth largest in the world.
San Franciscans got a real treat Friday with live music, family-friendly activities, a beer garden, and an extraordinary light show on City Hall's facade. VIPs had access to a delicious buffet, open bar, and more. "We are a strong city," Mayor Ed Lee announced. "And just like our City Hall, we will stand tall and proud against all odds."
