San Francisco Silent Film Festival

What: The five day, annual film festival showcases historically significant movies from the silent film era with screenings of films such as The Deadlier Sex and Ben-Hur. Digital restorations and live, professional orchestras bring to life love and adventure stories from the turn-of-the-century to the roarin' twenties. 

Why: Time travel back to the early 1900s and enjoy the rare opportunity to catch live cinema produced by some of the world's most renowned movie historians.  

When: The festival kicks off with a showing of All Quiet on the Western Front and a Gatsby-worthy 1920s themed Opening Night party on Thursday, May 28, and continues rolling the tape through June 1. A full schedule of movies can be found here

Where: Films are screened at the extravagant and famed Castro Theater at 429 Castro St.

Oakland Book Festival

What: This one day, open-to-the-public celebration of books, authors, and ideas is a reminder of the powers of literacy and cultural collaboration. Hosting more than sixty writers, the Oakland Book Festival offers attendees the chance to attend expert-moderated panels on a wide range of social justice issues, from gentrification to imprisonment. The festival also features live performances, food trucks, and a children's area. Book vendors will be on hand to help you satiate your newly acquired itch to read. 

Why: Celebrate and discuss culture in one of the most culturally rich cities in the world.

When: Sunday, May 31 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Find a full schedule of programs and panels here.

Where: The festival will be held at Oakland City Hall and the neighboring Frank Ogawa plaza.

Treasure Island Flea's Fourth Birthday Party

What: The cute and original Treasure Island Flea Market celebrates its fourth anniversary. With happy hour cocktails and a pet and family-friendly environment, the flea offers you everything you need to shop 'til you drop while sipping a housemade Moscow Mule. 

Why: Support local artists and entrepreneurs at a vibrant and much-loved community event. 

When: May 30 and 31, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. 

Where: Vendors set up shop at 1 Ave. of the Palms on Treasure Island.

San Francisco Botanical Garden Community Day

What: The San Francisco Botanical Garden celebrates its 75th anniversary with a day dedicated to the public. Enjoy an hour of morning reflection with a meditation walking tour, a yoga class amidst the flowers, or a guided bird walk. Meander through the sprawling gardens and greenery throughout the day while enjoying nourishment from a collection of Off the Grid Food Trucks and local vendors serving spirits, wines, and brews. 

Why: Flowers and food make for a relaxing day. 

When: The festival commences on Sunday, May 31 at 10 a.m. with a reflective hour. You can traipse through the flowers until 5 p.m. 

Where: The San Francisco Botanical Garden is housed in Golden Gate Park, with an entrance at the corner of Ninth Avenue and Lincoln.
