Break out your hemp parka and head over to Café Gratitude on Ninth Avenue (or its other location at 2400 Harrison St.) to hang with San Francisco’s eco-chic, raw-food aficionados. There’s a palpable feel-good vibe that’s enhanced by upbeat servers and walls covered with written affirmations. Sun-drenched seating is available everywhere—from the front dining room to a glass-ceilinged back room and outdoor picnic benches in the garden.
Menu items double as declarations. Telling the server, “I am delicious” will get you a protein shake of hemp milk, almond butter, dates, maca (a medicinal herb) and vanilla. The menu changes with the seasons, highlighting harvest-fresh veggies, whole grains and nut-based vegan “dairy” products. The pizzas—with cracker-thin crusts made from buckwheat and sunflower seeds, along with cashew “ricotta” and Brazil-nut “parmesan”—might even please a nonna.
