SCENE:

2007 EAT + DRINK AWARD: Best for a Large Group

With maroon walls, cushy booths and a long wooden bar updated with metal touches and modern angles, Sauce easily blends comfort and chic. The kitchen is open until midnight, making this the spot for late-night dinners.

EATS:

The hearty, well-executed food includes “fries” made of meaty portobello slices, calamari stuffed with sausage, meatloaf wrapped in apple-smoked bacon and—dare we say—the city’s best, and least conventional, macaroni and cheese: house-made pappardelle noodles smothered in four cheeses and cream and topped with shredded roasted chicken and asparagus. Save a bit of room for dessert, whether it’s homemade doughnuts in bourbon sauce, pan-seared sponge cake layered with peanut butter and jelly or the Guinness milk shake.
