After walking past the seemingly endless rows of boutiques in the new Westfield SF Centre, make your way through Bloomies to Mission Street to find casual but not food-court–level sustenance at the SF outpost of Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio’s upscale NYC sandwich chain. The cavernous space is sparely decorated, with long communal tables and an order-then-take-a-seat setup.
Colicchio has set out to prove that there’s more to the sandwich than processed meat slapped between slices of white bread. But be prepared to pay for it; these designer creations aren’t cheap (prices hover around $8). A grilled cheese made with Gruyère is gussied up with caramelized onions; slow-roasted pork is dressed with spicy mustard, red cabbage and jalapeños. Egg lovers will appreciate the all-day breakfast menu, which features a decadent fried-egg sandwich with bacon, gorgonzola and. For dessert, paper-thin peanut-butter sandwich cookies are a delight.
