For this week's Scenes of the City we spent some time with San Francisco artist Stephen Namara, a member of the Hunters Point Shipyard Artist group. Namara is an oil painter who uses a variety of techniques – including a cotton sock – to apply dry pigments. With a style that includes subtle gradients, traces of the process, deep, rich colors and a variety of textures, Namara's art is intricate and organic.

Born in 1953 in Kenya, Namara was educated locally at the San Francisco Art Institute, Cal State SF, Cal State East Bay, and the University of Missouri.

Namara has exhibited his art all over the US and is still fervently exploring the medium. Meet him yourself at the next Open Studios.
