SF’s fashion savvy showed up in droves on Wednesday to catch a few minutes with Simon Doonan, Barneys New York Creative Director (and famed window-dresser), who was at the Union Square store to autograph copies of his most recent style manifesto Eccentric Glamour. The book is premised on Doonan’s vocal critique of women’s fashion moving tragically in the direction of tacky—bordering on pornographic (one chapter is named “Say No to Ho.”) Known for his highly quotable tongue-in-cheek one-liners, we were surprised by the style guru’s slightly lower key persona the other day, as he quietly signed books in the accessories department for his SF eager fans. That is, until he turned around to show off his suit coat emblazoned in bold red letters with the phrase: Good Taste Doesn’t Exist. Little did we know, like all great fashionistas, Doonan was letting his clothes make the ultimate statement.
