Seven Favorite Things: Camelia Skikos' New Lookbook + Q&A
This week local design extraordinaire Camelia Skikos revealed her new Spring/Summer 2014 lookbook. In a word: amazing (but we'd expect nothing less).
We spoke with Skikos to get the scoop on her latest designs, her favorite local spots and more.
1. What inspired your new collection?
Inspired by contrasting elements like fire and water, my new collection investigates the possible ways of rendering the concept of duality.
For fabric design, I collaborated with photographer and cinematographer Milos Vlaski. He used photography as a medium to create the kaleidoscopic prints that translate in my collection through the sharp and strong juxtapositions of shapes and colors -- it creates a visual and tactile accumulation of contrasts.
2. What's sexy?
Confident, unconventional, unique, mysterious... Seductive without succumbing to the very obvious and overly sexual. I like to design for women who choose to wear clothes as a way to express their individuality and originality rather than being too concerned with looking sexy in a very obvious way.
3. What do you do to de-stress?
Travel. I always like to plan a little trip right after I finish each collection. Spending time with my family and friends while exploring new surroundings is what I like best. I'm actually packing as we speak -- we are going to Mexico tomorrow!
4. What's your favorite SF 'hood and why?
Hayes Valley. Aside from its diversity, this neighborhood’s appeal is also its strong cultural attractions, eclectic galleries, interesting boutiques and exotic restaurants. Some coffee shops have live music and poetry while others are designed with play areas for children so parents can enjoy a cup of coffee while their kids play...
5. What's your guilty pleasure band/musician/song?
Nick Cave - We No Who U R
6. What would you never be caught dead wearing
Logos. I don’t like clothes, bags or accessories that expose logos. No matter how cool the brand is, I wouldn't want to look like a walking advertisement.
7. What's your SF Top 5?
-Blue Bottle Coffee Company
