Pretty in Pink

Piglets. Cotton candy. Elle Woods. What’s the other reason we can’t get enough of the color pink? In October, it’s the hue that reminds us to raise funding for breast cancer research and awareness. If you haven’t picked up a copy of our October issue yet, head to the newsstands for our picks of the hottest pink products you can buy to benefit the cause. Here, a few extras we spotted around town to whet your shopping appetite.

Gab Fest with Proenza Schouler

Fresh off of New York Fashion Week, the genius boys behind Proenza Schouler (a.k.a. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez) breezed through San Francisco recently for a private trunk show and cocktail party at Neiman Marcus and, of course, a gab fest with 7x7. With leather gloves, sleek jumpsuits and zippered pencil skirts from their Spring 2009 collection in tow, the playful Manhattan-based duo shared their thoughts on diving into accessory design, getting inspired, and dressing their mothers.

Macy's Passport 2008

Comedian Dame Edna, No Doubt drummer Adrian Young, the Jabbawockeez dance crew and designer Tommy Hilfiger were just a few of the headliners who entertained a pack crowd at the Fort Mason Center’s Herbst Pavilion on Sept. 18 at the 26th annual Macy’s Passport HIV/AIDS fundraising gala. While long and lean models shared the catwalk with a host of dazzling entertainers (a Marilyn Monroe impersonator, salsa dancing couples and SF Cheer’s acrobatic troupes, to name a few) the main attraction, of course, was the fashion. Timeless fall staples—from evening gowns and trench coats to crisp suits and denim—dominated this year’s catwalk. Here, a few highlights from the fall collections at Macy’s.

Socks in the City

Here at 7x7, we’ve noticed a subtle yet daring trend has emerged onto the runways, into the streets and onto the feet of fashionable ladies everywhere: socks worn with heels

To the surprise of many, this look isn’t as new as it seems.  Besides the fact that it was the norm for American housewives and teenage girls in the ’40s, pairing thigh-baring hosiery with heels has been popular amongst Harajuku girls in Japan for years.  In recent seasons, the trend has been spotted all over the runways of such designers as Miu Miu, Wunderkind and Peter Jensen.

SF's Master of Up 'Dos

It’s high season for cultural events around town, and that means hair stylists skilled in special-occasion hair are in serious demand. I recently went looking for an expert who could pull off the quick-fire task of giving me some innovative up ‘dos—spurred by a recent flurry of post-work weeknight galas. Here are a couple of gorgeous styles whipped up by Cinta Salon’s Ernie Meneses, a Tinseltown-native and recent SF transplant, who has been in the hair biz for more than eight years. After my first visit with Ernie, I quickly realized I’d never have to worry about ending up with the dreaded over-curled and shellacked “bridesmaid” hair.

Make Room For Fall Fashion, Sell Your Clothes

As Labor Day BBQs flame out, picnic baskets migrate to top shelves, and open-toed shoes march towards final sale racks, the signals are clear: it's time to start planning your fall wardrobe.  A prerequisite to this endeavor, however, is purging your closet to make room for some choice fall arrivals.  Not always an easy task.   What's even more unpleasant is lugging all of your "okay maybe I can part with this"  items to your local buy/sell shop, only to have them tossed in the "reject" pile before even unfolding.  Kinda humiliating.  So, here are some Cliff's Notes to bear in mind before you start stuffing that Trader Joes bag for your next selling trip.
