Although we’re in the middle of SF Beer Week, we’re also near the midpoint of Strong Beer Month. To help you better plan your itineraries for both, it seemed like a good time to check in with the strong beer brewers to see how their supplies of the heavyweights are holding up.
In addition lacing up your White Buck Oxfords, Memorial Day weekend is also the time to officially scrub down and fire up the grill. And while there is season enough to put a flame under eggplant slices, skewered tofu, marinated portabellas, and the like, for this weekend I want a slab of something substantial, sentient even. But what brew to serve? I went deep to some local experts and got the following beer pairing recommendations for 2011’s opening salvo in the war on underindulgence:

It's bracket season-- that special time of year when everyone, down to the President himself, is filling out their NCAA tournament picks for the office betting pool. While most of us can't influence the outcome of the Final Four, there's another March faceoff in which everyone gets a say: the Washington Post's annual Beer Madness competition. Last year's Beer Madness spanned the globe, but 2011's tourney is exclusively focused on American craft brews, meaning more of Northern California's finest get to compete.

Twitter has reached new heights this morning—21st Amendment brewer Shaun O'Sullivan is live-tweeting (is that an oxy-moron?) the brewing process of his latest creation: a spring ale made with floral, spicy hops, a brew he called "light, refreshing and drinkable"—in other words, perfect for spring. After soliciting name suggestions from his twitter feed followers (go on, follow it now!) they finally settled on a name, Spring Tweet. Ah, shucks. All day today Shaun will be posting pictures and step-by-step updates; I suggested that for his next beer, he let his followers help make decisions, via tweets, at critical junctures. What type of malt to use? What type of hops?
